On August 31, 2016, Shakori Hills proudly partners with the Chatham County Community Library in presenting a lecture, “Piedmont String Band Music: the African American Connection,” by Bob Carlin, author, musician and traditional music historian.

imagesWhen most people think about traditional music, they assume that all fiddlers and banjoists are white mountain dwellers. However, recent research has revealed that not only does the Piedmont have rich string music traditions as well, but that many master players resided within communities of African-Americans.

This lecture will cover the history of Piedmont music making and makers. Presenter Bob Carlin will provide stories and musical examples that illuminate this colorful story.

bgrodayBob Carlin has spent the last thirty years documenting and presenting the music and musicians of North Carolina’s Piedmont. Through publications such as String Bands in the North Carolina Piedmont and The North Carolina Banjo Collection, Carlin has
preserved the traditional music of the region. His research has resulted in performances with such tradition bearers as North Carolina Folk Heritage Award winners Marvin Gaster and Joe Thompson, who also was a NEA National Heritage Fellow.
